Why Readers Love Books Set in Upstate New York: The Magic of The Finger Lakes

Finger Lakes in Upstate New York

Some places feel like characters in their own right. The Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York is one of those places.

With its small towns, rolling vineyards, sparkling lakes, and four distinct seasons, it's the kind of setting that naturally lends itself to stories about community, second chances, and finding where you belong.

I should know. I grew up in nearby Rochester, New York—home to Kodak, Xerox, the Lilac Festival, and The Strong National Museum of Play. It's a place where summer is impossibly green, autumn paints the landscape in gold and amber, and winter blankets everything in pristine white.

When I sat down to write my first novel, I found myself returning to the landscapes I knew best.

What Makes the Finger Lakes Such a Great Setting for Fiction?

The best fictional settings don't simply provide a backdrop for a story. They shape the people who live there.

The Finger Lakes region is full of the kinds of places that inspire memorable stories:

  • Walkable Main Streets where everyone knows everyone else's business

  • Family-owned shops and restaurants that become gathering places

  • Vineyards and wineries that draw visitors from around the world

  • Tight-knit communities that celebrate together and rally when times get tough

  • Four distinct seasons that transform the landscape—and often the lives of the people living there

In a small town, it's difficult to stay anonymous. People notice when you're struggling. They show up when you need help.

And sometimes they become the family you didn't know you were looking for.

Those are exactly the kinds of stories I love to write.

Welcome to Seneca Springs

Seneca Springs is a fictional town nestled in the Finger Lakes wine region.

It's not a real place, but readers often tell me it feels like one.

At the beginning of The Summer Breeze Bed & Breakfast, Callie Williams arrives in Seneca Springs looking for a fresh start. What she discovers is far more than a charming small town. She finds friendship, purpose, community, and the possibility of a life she never imagined.

As the series unfolds, readers get to explore more of the town, meet new residents, and watch Seneca Springs change through the seasons.

Like many real Finger Lakes communities, it's a place where relationships matter, neighbors become friends, and second chances are always possible.

If you enjoy stories where place and community are every bit as important as plot, I'd love to invite you to visit Seneca Springs.

The Summer Breeze series begins with The Summer Breeze Bed & Breakfast and follows a cast of characters as they navigate friendship, family, love, loss, and new beginnings in a small Finger Lakes town.

And if you're curious about my standalone novel, The Recipient, you'll find the same focus on relationships, community, and emotional connection—just with a little more suspense.
